The Museum of Disability History at The Viscardi Center welcomes individuals, school and community groups, and businesses to learn, reflect, and engage with disability history. The museum is committed to providing an inclusive and accessible experience for all visitors, in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines.

We’re committed to making our museum experience fully accessible to all visitors, including youth and adults with disabilities. The entire museum space is wheelchair accessible, and we are implementing a variety of tools to assist low vision and blind visitors, as well as deaf individuals and those with hearing loss. These include captioned video content, assistive listening devices, and audio descriptions via Bloomberg Connects. In addition, sensory bags with noise-reduction headphones and fidgets are available to borrow at no cost. Service animals, trained to perform tasks related to a disabled individual, are welcome at the museum and must be under control of the visitor at all times. Please ask for any assistance, or borrow the items, at the museum entrance desk.

The Museum of Disability History at The Viscardi Center is located at 201 I.U. Willets Road (at the corner of I.U. Willets and Searingtown Roads) in Albertson, New York, a few miles east of the Queens border of New York City, in western Nassau County.
Getting here
Directions by Car
From the west – Long Island Expressway/Rte 495 Exit 36 – Searingtown Road: Take Searingtown Road. SOUTH about 3/4 mile to I.U. Willets Road. You will see The Viscardi Center sign on the far right corner. Turn RIGHT onto I.U. Willets Road and follow the signs to the Museum entrance.
From the west – Northern State Parkway Exit 27 – Shelter Rock Road:
Take Shelter Rock Road. SOUTH to second traffic light. Turn LEFT onto I.U. Willets Road. for about 3/4 mile. About a block BEFORE traffic light, you will see The Viscardi Center sign on your right. Turn into the first driveway and follow the signs to the Museum entrance.
From eastern Long Island (eastern Nassau and Suffolk Counties):
Long Island Expressway (Rte. 495) WEST to exit 36 SOUTH – Searingtown Road. Follow Searingtown Road directions above.
From southern and midtown Manhattan:
Queens Midtown Tunnel to Long Island Expressway (Rte 495) EAST through Queens. Take exit 36 SOUTH-Searingtown Road. Turn RIGHT onto Searingtown Road. Follow Searingtown Road directions above.
From upper Manhattan:
Triborough Bridge to Queens. Continue on Grand Central Parkway EAST through Queens (becomes Northern State Parkway). Take exit #27 SOUTH-Shelter Rock Road. Turn RIGHT onto Shelter Rock Road. Follow Shelter Rock Road directions above.
Directions by Bus (from Queens)
Transfer to N23 bus in Roslyn at the CLOCKTOWER stop. Take N23 to Willis Avenue and I.U. Willets Road.
Walk WEST on I.U. Willets Road several blocks to Searingtown Road. The Museum is on the far left corner of I.U. Willets and Searingtown Roads.
ACCESSIBILITY NOTES FOR DISABLED VISITORS: All standard NICE buses contain features and equipment that allow disabled riders to board, ride, and get out of vehicles easily and comfortably. This includes the capability to “kneel,” or tilt themselves closer to the curb, ramps that fold out to make a bridge between the bus and the curb, areas where mobility devices can be secured, and priority seating areas. Connections between the two of the noted LIRR stations and the museum via NICE will take you within seven tenths of a mile to the museum entrance. The N22 or N23 bus (stop Willis and Coventry Roads, approximately .7 miles from the museum entrance along McKinley Avenue) connects the Mineola LIRR station. The N23 bus also connects the East Williston LIRR station within .7 miles of the museum with the noted travel down McKinley Avenue to the entrance. There is no connecting NICE bus from Albertson, and the distance to the museum from that station is one mile directly along I.U. Willets Road. Arranging for an accessible vehicle from a station to the museum is also an option.
Directions by Railroad
You may take the Long Island Railroad to one of the following train stations: Mineola, Albertson or Manhasset. The Museum is a short taxi ride from each of these stations.
ACCESSIBILTY NOTES FOR DISABLED VISITORS: The three closest Long Island Railroad stations to the Museum are Albertson, East Williston and Mineola. Each station is considered fully accessible with elevators, ramps, tactile warning strips, and audiovisual passenger information systems. Parking
Free onsite parking is available, including designated accessible parking spaces and an area for buses.
SCHOOL/GROUP GUIDED TOURS
Guided tours for school field trips, camps, scouting and community groups, and organizations are available by reservation. The discounted group rate is $6.00 per visitor.
Venue Rental Options
The Museum of Disability History offers a meaningful, fully accessible backdrop for events, meetings and community gatherings. The space can be customized to fit your needs. Audio-Visual and Digital Accessibility Services, such as audio description, video captioning and CART (Communication Access Real-time Translation), are available to ensure equal access for individuals with hearing and vision loss.
